    Hello everyone,

We are back for another week with the lockdown sightings blog. Although we are slowly starting to ease out of lockdown, obviously the covid-19 situation is still ongoing, so we do recommend that if you are visiting the reserve you adhere to social distancing recommendations. Do keep others in mind, don't crowd together, and please allow others to gain access to the best viewpoints. The visitor centre …

    Small mammals in your garden.

Hello everyone! This week’s garden wildlife blog will focus on some of the smaller, more elusive species that exist in our gardens. Gardens support a range of native UK mammal species, providing a stable habitat and food supplies. Almost all gardens, even small ones and those that reside in the centre of the city will occasionally be visited by a small mammal. Small mammals are ‘small-bodied…

  • Garden Wildlife Blog #8

    Hello everyone,

In this week's garden wildlife blog we will be looking at gulls. You might be thinking why gulls are featuring in a garden wildlife blog, when they aren’t typically garden birds. However, with the ever-growing global human population and spread of human territory, they are one of many species moving into urban areas. We are aware that developing urban settings can have negative implications on wildlife…

RSPB staff are working…

    Bugs, slugs and more!

    Hello everyone,

For this week’s garden wildlife blog, we are looking at bugs, slugs and more! This week will be dedicated to some of the critters you can find hiding within your garden. First though, let’s have a look at some facts. The critters we are looking at are collectively grouped as invertebrates, which are animals without a backbone and include hard-bodied (exoskeleton) and multi-legged…

  • Frampton Marsh Lockdown Sightings Blog #3

    Hello everyone,

We are back for another week with our lockdown sightings blog, with observations recorded by Anthony (Assistant Warden) while out on essential visits to the reserve between 4 May – 8 May. Despite some very slight changes in lockdown restrictions, the reserve remains closed to the public for now. Our priority is to ensure that we only re-open when we have everything in place to keep our members, visitors…

  • Garden Wildlife Blog #7

    Hello everyone,

So, for this weeks Garden Wildlife Blog we are talking about something a bit different; instead of looking directly into the wildlife we find in our garden, we are looking at what they sometimes leave behind! That’s right, their POOP! (Beware pictures of poop ahead).

Poop, crap, scat, turd, stool, kak, dung, doody, faeces… there are so many words to use when speaking about animal excrement (including…

  • Frampton Marsh Lockdown Sightings Blog #2

    Garden Wildlife blog #6

    Hello everyone,

Another week in lockdown, another garden wildlife blog, I hope you enjoy it. This week we are focusing on a popular garden visitor, or visitors I should say.

Let’s venture into the world of the tits. In the UK there are six species of breeding tits, including; blue tit, great tit, coal tit, crested tit, marsh tit and willow tit. These species form the family known as Paridae. Long…

  • Frampton Marsh Lockdown Sightings Blog #1

    Hello everyone,

We are back with the sightings blog this week for Frampton Marsh! We recently paused posting about the whereabouts of birds on the reserve, as we were all getting used to the new conditions of lockdown and was waiting on information on how to proceed. However, with guidance from the government and the RSPB communications team, we can now start sharing our sightings with you again. We mostly want to bring…

    Hello everyone,

This week we are focusing on one of our favourite garden birds, sitting in the top 10 at number 5 in the Bird Garden Birdwatch, blackbirds are a regular visitor to our gardens. I personally love them, they are striking and interesting to watch when they bounce across my lawn and they have a beautiful song which I love to hear.

Blackbirds are very productive in the UK, with around 5,100,000…

    Wildlife Blog #4

    Hello everyone,

Another week in lockdown, another garden wildlife blog, enjoy!

This week we are going to take a closer look at a prickly visitor to our gardens, but not too close! Having around 5000 - 7000 spines, the hedgehog’s defensive adaptation allows them to curl into a prickly and unappetizing ball, deterring most predators. They will also curl up to snooze so that they are protected when sleeping…

  • Garden Wildlife Blog #3

    Hello everyone,

This week we are focusing on another popular garden creature, butterflies!

Arguably one of the most beautiful visitors to our gardens, butterflies can frequently be seen during spring and summer close to home. So, let’s take some time to learn a bit more about them. We are all aware of the infamous change butterflies undergo, completely altering their bodily form in a process called metamorphosis. Within…

  • COVID-19 update: reserve CLOSED

Following the latest clear instructions from the Government for us all to remain at home apart from a limited number of allowed activities, we are closing our reserve to visitors until further notice.

This means we will close our car park and hides to the public. These measures are on top of the existing closure of our visitor centre and toilets.  It is with great sadness that we ask people to refrain from visiting the…

Obviously with the covid-19 situation still ongoing…
