Seal - Fen Drayton Lakes

I've heard many times about a seal being seen on The Great Ouse at Fen Drayton Lakes, but until today had not seen one. Quite a sight to see as you can imagine!! - especially as we are so far inland.

Quite a distant shot, but clearly recognisable. Spotted 17.02.2012 upstream from the Ferry Boat.

  • ^ thanks Emma & Uitlander. Yes, a real treat to see. I wasn't totally shocked as a couple of friends had seen one recently in the river. Having seen a stoat & a mink on the riverbank in recent weeks I tend to keep one eye on the river whilst walking along (probably why I'm so prone to falling over!)

  • Amamzing. I've seen them and dives with them in the north of England and Scotland, but had no idea we had them in this part of the country. Well done!

  • Wow this is amazing! I bet you were thrilled to capture this! I'd have had to do a double-take!

  • ^ thanks mate, like all these things Steve much of it comes down to luck - right place, right time.

In truth this isn't a great photo (maximum zoom, poor light and the seal went underwater having seen me & didn't re-emerge). However, it is one of my favourite photos of the year so far - simply because, for me, it was such a great thing to see & so unusual in this setting.

Fen Drayton Lakes RSPB never ceases to amaze me - just when you think you've seen everything it proves that you most certainly haven't!

  • Well done Kev, great shot. What a great find.

I was born and bred in Houghton, we lived down Mill Street near the river Mill, my Brother and I grew up down the river as it was our "play ground", I have been seeing seals in our rivers for 40 years plus, but this is the first one this way, they get through locks no problem.

    Well done!.

    Steve.
