We have also been pleased to see our bearded tits using the well-placed grit tray too! Grit is important for bearded tits as they use it to help grind up the seeds they eat. In the summer bearded tits will feed off insects but in winter time…

  • Dungeness update 08/10/2016

What a week it has been for bird sightings! We've had lots of birds gather here for their migration south and also seen one or two winter visitors arrive!

The weathers turned a bit chillier this week but we are still seeing dragonflies out on the reserve - that's probably why we still have hundreds of swallows and the occasional hobby about.

A glossy ibis has been seen almost daily on the reserve, mostly hanging…

  • Dungeness update 30/09/2016

Can you believe it's the last day of September? This year has flown by! We've had another fabulous week on the reserve full of wonderful sightings. This weeks superstars are the glossy ibis, montagu's harrier and the cattle egret (which has become best mates with the cows and has been seen with them every day).

  • What a beautiful day to be at Dungeness...

Today we have pond dipping sessions between 10am and 2pm. So drop in to the visitor centre any time between then, grab a net and delve deep into our pond to see what minibeasts are swimming below the surface. The last pond dipping session of the year cannot be missed on such a lovely sunny day!

The buff-breasted sandpiper is still here, it was last seen yesterday around 3pm. Hopefully it is still around to view today…

  • Just spotted: buff-breasted sandpiper

A buff-breasted sandpiper has just been seen from Makepeace hide on the reserve. There's only been 3 records of it on Dungeness before, the last was 5 years ago!

  • Recent sightings at Dungeness - 5th September 2016

Over the weekend we've had some unusual reports here at Dungeness.

We have had a red-necked phalarope stay with us over the weekend. These small, delicate waders are adapted well to spending a lot of time on water. Unlike other waders, phalaropes have lobed toes which enable them to swim strongly when on pools or out at sea. They spend most of their time in the water but can equally run about on land. The duller…
