The reed beds are looking fantastic at the moment and as I drove home last night, the last rays of an absolutely amazing sunset were catching the tops of the reeds, making them appear to be on fire. The wardens and volunteers have been working hard to get the reed beds into perfect condition for our wintering wildlife which includes the Bittern. Bitterns have the most beautiful plumage which is perfectly coloured to enable them to blend into a winter reedbed. However there has been a very obliging Bittern basking at the edge of the reeds near Hookers ramp giving great views for our visitors. On Sunday morning (15 December 2013) you can join us on the trail of the bittern leaving the Visitor centre at 11 am. As well as keeping their eyes open for Bittern, our guides will also be watching out for the other wildlife that makes RSPB Dungeness its winter home. We will return to the Visitor centre for 1pm when you can check out our Christmas sale items in the shop. Check out our webpage or call 01797 320588 to book onto the walk.
