What a gorgeous day today, finally the warm weather is here and it’s looking like it will stay for the weekend!
Today our warden team were putting out the floating raft, hoping to entice terns to nest on it. You will be able to see it from Dennis’ hide. Fingers crossed for fluffy chicks this summer. We are also putting one outside the visitor centre but it’s likely to be commandeered by the gulls who have staked their claim on the posts outside the window.
The wildlife garden is starting to look amazing again and there are great tits nesting in the bird box and newts and frogs in the pond. Come on down and take a look!
Whilst scooping up the pond weed today I accidentally caught a juvenile marsh frog:
We’ve had lots of different birds sighted today with people seeing whimbrel, marsh harriers and linnets as they drove down the track to the visitor centre. The glorious sound of the cuckoo has been heard around the reserve with them being spotted at ARC. Common sandpiper, wood sandpiper, oystercatcher and bar-tailed godwits have been seen wading in the rapidly appearing islands on Burrowes pit.
Little terns, common terns, Mediterranean gulls and little gulls have also been hanging around Burrowes pit.
Another lovely sight was a nightingale that was spotted at Denge gully on the 1st May. Hobbies are also around, swooping through the skies with the swallows, martins and swifts.
Our beautiful wildflowers are just starting to poke their heads out of the ground, so very soon Dungeness will be in a swathe of summer colour once again!
Tomorrow we are hosting a Dawn Chorus walk which starts at 6am, so if you feel like making the most of your day (especially a warm, sunny one) then come on down and listen to the glorious bird song around the reserve. Adults are £8, Children £4. If you’re a member then you get 20% off!
