    The team have been busy getting the majority of the habitat management completed before the breeding season and we are now very close with only a few small tasks left before we start the big clean-up and get onto our spring/summer task programme.

  • Dengemarsh Hide Updates

    Gilleards have been on site last week replacing the roof and foundations to Dengemarsh Hide and the roofs of Christmas Dell and the Viewing Screen with a new hardwearing roof. This will help to maintain these hides into the future. More work will be needed on the hide in the coming months and years, but we now have a good idea of what we need to do and will keep you all informed of what is happening.

    The team have spent a lot of time working in the high-water levels this month in areas across the reserve including Hookers and Dengemarsh Reedbed, clearing willow trees which are keen to outcompete the reed which our breeding bittern and marsh harriers utilise.

    This clearance includes a large island which was full of willow and bramble close to Hooker’s ramp and we now hope that the reedbed will recolonise and the willow…

    We had our first Winter Wildlife Guided Walk of 2023 led by Paul Trodd. It was a great turn out of attendees and wildlife, with sightings including greenfinches, goldeneye, great white egret, and kestrels.

Despite starting off with near record lows following the dry summer, we are now approximately 10cm off the highest recorded water level on Burrowes Pit.     The wet weather hasn’t stopped the team this month. Water levels have come up an astonishing 55cm on Burrowes Pit in a very short space of time. This has played merry hell with the track and in spite of repairs in November, further repair works will be undertaken in December.
