One Slightly Disgruntled Little Egret

I had another trip to Old Moor this week, and as usual there was plenty to see and watch.  The star for me this trip had to be one slightly disgruntled Little Egret.  Just how much water does one bird need to fish in?  This one was certainly not sharing!  There he was minding his own business catching himself the odd fish or two....

....when along came a second Egret who was not going to be tolerated.

I think we can imagine what he is saying here!

But when the hint isn't taken, further action is required!

And just to get the second Egret out of the water wasn't enough - he had to be banished from the area entirely.

Peace restored once more, so back to the fishing!

The second Little Egret must have been a glutton for punishment - he came back for more!

And got it!

It was so entertaining watching all the antics!

A bit later on in the day, the heavens opened and we took refuge in the nearest hide (Field Pool West) which was where we had been watching the Egret earlier.  This was not one of his better days!

Off in search of shelter but not really finding it!

  • It does look like it's chucking it down there - I think I'd want shelter from that.

I love watching Egrets and Herons. When they're actually fishing, they can get really stroppy with each other, which is great to watch, but otherwise are quite happy to just idle around together and they can still be pretty photogenic with all the character and poses those great long necks allow!

  • Great shots Christine, the one with both wings outstretched just shows the length and breadth of the birds, you would think there would be enough food for both of them:-)   You had some of the same "showers" that we had today, pretty torrential, lucky you were near a hide.

    Lot to learn

  • lovely set of photos Christine showing just how stroppy the Egrets can get when it comes to keeping their own space  lol

That was some rain storm !

  • Great sequence of photos, Christine. Little Egrets can be intolerant of other egrets sharing their feeding area.

That was quite some rain storm. Not often it shows up like that in photographs. The L Egret looks as hunched up and miserable as I would have been if I'd been caught out in it.
