OLD MOOR SPOTLIGHT 2025-04-26
It’s been a week of unusual birds passing through Old Moor. ARCTIC TERN, KITTIWAKE and even a BAR-TAILED GODWIT have visited us for short periods, before moving on to wherever they should be at this time of year. Please don’t come expecting to see them, they were not among our usual residents. There was a WOOD SANDPIPER over at our Adwick Washlands site as well but that too seems to have not stayed for very long.
Much more reliable have been the five species that have been exciting us over at Wombwell Ings over the last few days. These are WATER PIPIT, GARGANEY, LITTLE OWL, at least 5 YELLOW WAGTAILS and a WHOOPER SWAN with an injured wing which it looks like it could be here for a while.
Old Moor’s usual population of BITTERNS, BEARDED REEDLINGS, MARSH HARRIER, LITTLE EGRET, CETTI’S WARBLER, MEDITERRANEAN GULL. KINGFISHER and PEREGRINE have been joined by some other, rarer (for here) birds. So if you drop in to see us soon you might find (as well as the above) DUNLIN, GOOSANDER, STONECHAT, WHITETHROAT, REDSTART and SEDGE WARBLER. The seasons do indeed seem to be changing.
I’ll finish, as always, with the upcoming highlights from our EVENTS calendar.
April 29 - Dawn Chorus Walk with our Head Warden Dave.
May 1 - Bittern Breakfast with Site Manager Emma.
July 5 - ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, theatre on the lawn. It’s Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before.
