I am forwarding a message from Joanne Stamper regarding the current archaeological excavation in Abbeytown.  If anyone is interested in visiting the dig or attending the salt production talk contact Joanne directly or just pop down and see them.

Dear Hidden Heritage Volunteers,

We are now in week 3 of our excavation at Abbeytown. For those of you who have not managed to join us, we are updating the web page on the Grampus Heritage website with photos, so you can see how we are getting on.

Next week, we have something slightly different for you to attend if you wish. On Tuesday and Wednesday (15th & 16th September), Andrew Fielding is leading 2 days on salt production.

On Tuesday morning, we are meeting at our excavation site at Abbeytown at 10am. In the church rooms, there will be a brief talk by Mark about the Salt survey we have done on the marsh. After this, Andrew will lead the group to the marsh (entrance point at Newton Arlosh, though this will be confirmed on the morning), to go round and discuss the sites we picked up. Then the group will return to Abbeytown for around 330pm for a debrief talk by Andrew.  We will be going to the marsh in convoy, so if you are happy to offer car share, then please let us know, or say so on the morning.

On Wednesday morning, meeting again at Abbeytown at 10am. Andrew will give an introductory talk on salt production and from about 11am onwards, start boiling the brine near the excavation site. When crystals start to form, there will be another debrief talk by Andrew before the day ends.

For both days, you will need a packed lunch and wear appropriate clothing, as we may not be able to use the church rooms all day if it is wet.

If this is something that you would like to take part in, let us know if it is one or both days. Otherwise, you are welcome to join in the morning if you decide to.

See you there

Regards,

Mark and Jo
