Well the summer holidays are nearly here and hopefully there will be some more sunshine heading our way. We have a number of events on over the holiday for children, young people and families which you may be interested in as well as our Solway Nature Explorers weeks:
Tale Trails
Saturday 18th July, 11am-3pm
Finglandrigg Wood NNR, Nr Kirkbampton
Join Natural England and friends for a family friendly day. Meet the crazy critters of Finglandrigg Wood and explore the site with the help of our new Tale Trail. There will be some story-telling, the chance to create your own funky map and loads of fun crafts!
Wetland Discovery Day
Sunday 19th July, 11am-4pm
RSPB Campfield Marsh, Bowness-on-Solway
Come and join us for a fun-filled day of wildlife discovery. Drop-in anytime between 11am and 4pm to take part in lots of activities, including pond dipping, a creepy crawly hunt, storytelling walks, crafts, bird bingo and bushcraft. Free of charge, just turn up.
Solway Nature Explorers
Week 1 (28-31st July) – pick-ups from: Silloth, Abbeytown, Wigton, Kirkbride, Bowness
Week 2 (11-14th Aug) – picky-ups from: Cockermouth, Aspatria, Wigton, Kirkbride, Bowness
An action packed programme for ages 9-14 including for £10 per child: Studying animals, birds, insects and flora, Exploring the Solway bogs, Wildlife Photography, Arts and creative activities, Bushcraft, fire lighting and wild food, loads of fun, adventure and new friends. See the attached booking form to reserve your child’s place.
Landscape Photography
Saturday 15th August, 10am – 4pm
Landscape Photography on the Solway is a workshop aimed at beginners / improvers looking at the beautiful Solway in summertime, and will include some 'classroom' time as well as outdoor practical work. This session will be led by Steve Blake, a local landscape photographer, who will be on hand to give you hints and tips throughout the day as part of a group and also on a one to one basis. Suitable for adults and older young people who would like to learn more with an expert at hand.
Dig for the past on the Solway
Monday 24th August – Sunday 4th October

Get your hands dirty and discover 850 years of Hidden Solway heritage by getting involved in a real archaeological excavation. Grampus Heritage are leading a 6 week dig on a variety of sites on the Solway Plain looking at the impact of the Medieval monastery of Holme Cultram Abbey in Abbeytown on the Solway Landscape. Call in anytime between 10am and 4pm Sunday to Friday and chat to the archaeologists or help with a few jobs on site. Or get more involved by joining in becoming a volunteer, no matter how much or how little time you have on your hands. All ages and abilities are welcome.
Woodland Weekender
Friday 4th September – Saturday 5th September
Finglandrigg Wood NNR, near Kirkbampton
Kicking off with a "Batty about Bats" night time walk around the woods on the Friday, join us for a celebration of all things woodland. With the help of Natural England and friends, Saturday’s activities will involve walks, trails, traditional crafts, charcoal making, wildlife spotting, folk tales and more. Bring a packed lunch if you’re staying all day Saturday! Free of charge, just turn up.
As well as this there are also Tale Trail story maps available at the Solway Wetlands Centre at RSPB Campfield Marsh if you would like to go off and explore on your own. Read the story and follow the adventures of Elmo the Peewit while you wander about the site, fun for all the family!
