A little bit of a different blog post from me today! Here on the farm we not only manage Campfield Marsh but also St Bees Head and Hodbarrow down in the south of the county near Millom and Haverigg. An old mine, the reserve consists of sea wall which encloses a large fresh water lagoon. Within the lagoon there is a slag island which is a historic site for breeding little, sandwich and common terns. In previous years terns have attempted and failed to breed due to a number of reasons - predation being a major factor. Over recent years we have been doing work to fence the island off to prevent foxes and other mammalian predators and it seems to be doing the trick. This year has been extremely productive! If you would like to read the full story of the season (which isn't over yet.) then have a look at the Hodbarrow blog here. Ok back to Campfield with the next post I promise.....
