The emergence of flying ants at the start of the week caused a frenzy of feeding by several species at Broadwater Warren. Up to 10 spotted flycatchers with fledged young, Willow warblers, Chiffchaffs, Chaffinches and Greater spotted woodpeckers were all seen within a small area near the zigzag boardwalk. A male lesser spotted woodpecker was also seen feeding on some of the birch trees near the boardwalk.
Fledged young continue to be seen across the main heath and woods including Siskin, Tree pipit, Stonechat, Yellowhammer, Skylark and Woodlark.
A group of crossbills was also reported on pines near the nightjar viewpoint.
Other wildlife sightings include a Purple Emperor near the woodland edge on the western heath a few weeks ago. Silver washed fritillary and White admirals have been seen throughout the wood including near decoy pond. Golden ringed dragonflies have also been seen flying along the woodland rides near decoy pond.
A pond dipping event with a local browny and guide group found lots of young palmate newts in decoy pond as well as young toads and a water stick insect and water scorpion.
Several black adders have also been seen on site in the last few weeks. This melanistic form has the advantage of allowing them to warm up and regulate body heat better than other colourations but has the disadvantage of making them more obvious to predators.
