Our Work Party volunteers have just attended a tree planting day at Broadwater and got stuck in, planting 50 new native trees in an area that was previously only birch.
The volunteers planted Oak, Rowan, Hazel, Sallow, Hawthorn, Spindle, and Blackthorn. This will help to produce a rich and diverse woodland area that will be great for our resident dormice and a wide range of other species. The cost of the saplings was covered by a very kind donation from members of the RSPB Tonbridge Local Group.
The saplings will be protected from rabbits by tubes and held straight with stakes.
More tree planting will take place as we restore the woodlands. Over the next 8 years many of the conifer plantations will be removed and native broadleaved species will be planted in their place. Many conifer trees will be retained (especially our superb Douglas Firs), but the overall result will be a much more diverse woodland with sunny rides and glades and a whole range of tree and shrub species.
Our Broadwater volunteers could be very busy!
