  • Barn owls breed at RSPB Bempton Cliffs for the first time.

    Maria Prchlik

Welcoming any new youngster into the world is a cause for celebration.

But the successful fledging of two barn owls at RSPB Bempton Cliffs is a really special moment – especially at a time when wildlife in general is in so much trouble.

The cliff top team were hopeful of a new arrival when a pair of adult barn owls took up residence in one of two owl boxes in the spring.

Both boxes were originally installed six…

  • Twin-town visitor makes a big impression

    Maria Prchlik
    Maria Prchlik

Volunteers at RSPB Bempton Cliffs come from across the region.  But the most recent hails from a little further afield - Bad Salzuflen in North West Germany, one of nearby Bridlington’s twin towns.

Jan-Philip Mortgenstern first visited the cliff tops as a child in 2006 during a visit to Bridlington Priory with his home town’s choir.  His family formed a strong bond with a local family and have stayed in touch…

  • Molly’s bottle battle comes to RSPB Bempton Cliffs

    Maria Prchlik

Perched on the edge of the North Sea, RSPB Bempton Cliffs is particularly conscious of issues surrounding marine plastic and is always looking for ways to reduce the material’s use on site.

Its latest move is all down to a Huddersfield schoolgirl, 10 year old Molly Cotgrave.

Molly, whose grandparents work and volunteer at the award-winning nature reserve on the Yorkshire Coast, was inspired by a feature on BBC…

  • Follow the bird trail

    Maria Prchlik
    Maria Prchlik

There are going to be quite a few rare birds in Bridlington over the week of 17-23 June.

The annual Artwaves festival has introduced a bird trail to this year's programme and is encouraging visitors and locals alike to follow it all around the town.

The birds have been decorated by local artists and each has its own distinctive design - from realistic to abstract.

According to RSPB data, 40 million birds in the UK…

  • Bempton Cliffs' puffin goes global

    Maria Prchlik
    Maria Prchlik

A globetrotting soft toy is helping to spread the word about the plight of puffins.

Spiker the puffin was bought at the Seabird Centre in Bempton Cliffs in 2018 by Ruth Naughton-Doe from Hull:

‘I just thought he was really cute.  At that point, I didn’t know much about the real puffins that make their home on the cliffs but when we found out that puffins faced

the same level of extinction threat as the African…
