Singing carols is one of the joys of Christmas. And all the old favourites were sung beautifully by pupils of Martongate Primary School as the residents of Sewerby village took to the streets to celebrate the start of the festive season.
With head teacher Helen Gee at the helm, the school choir led the group from the Methodist Church to the Christmas Tree outside Sewerby Hall, stopping along the way for readings from the Christmas story and carol singing. At the Ship Inn, the group knocked on the door only to be turned away with a gruff ‘No room here’.
After the final notes of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ died away, the chair of the Residents’ Association, Martin Guthrie, handed over three cheques to this year’s chosen charities – amongst them, the RSPB at Bempton Cliffs.
Then it was back to The Ship for mulled wine and mince pies. Our heart-felt thanks go to the villagers for their warm welcome and generous support.
