I am sorry to say that our usual recent sightings blogger, Mr Ian Kendall has now left the RSPB and has moved on to pastures new. So now it is up to me to keep you all informed on what’s been seen or happening at Bempton Cliff’s nature reserve. So what has happened since the last update?

Well the short-eared owl has been making some superb appearances, hunting over the field behind the visitor centre. One January morning after the heavy snow I actually spooked three from their perches when I entered the car park. There is still the occasional sighting of a short-eared owl, but the best time to see them is late afternoon.

The Gannets have started to arrive back to find their nesting perches which they use every year. There was a big sigh of relief from Angela, one of our volunteers. She was so relived to see that the same pair she has been watching for 18 years had managed to survive yet another winter. Let’s just hope that we don’t have a repeat of last summer and have a successful breeding season. Oh and some rare migrants would be nice too, so until next time.
