Autumn and winter is a great time for stretching your legs on the cliff tops.

It’s not only great exercise, it’s also a wonderful way to escape the pressure of a busy life.

So whether you’re looking to lose a few pounds or forget a bad day at the office, walking around the reserve with nothing but the sound of the waves crashing or the wind whistling can be truly therapeutic.

In fact, walking is the good all round exercise for total wellbeing:

  • It’s good for bones and muscle.
  • It burns calories. A good rule of thumb (but it depends on your size and walking speed) is between 70 and 100 calories per mile.
  • It builds stamina
  • It helps beat stress: walking takes your mind off stuff
  • It can cut your risk of heart disease by up to 50%, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and the risk of some cancers
  • It boosts your immune system for 24 hours
  • It can lower blood pressure

And you can walk around the reserve whenever it’s best for you – while the kids are at school, at the weekend or before work, if the mood grabs you.    Our open spaces at Bempton Cliffs never close.

We’re planning a number of guided walks around the reserve over the coming months.  Check the events pages for details.
