Red Squirrel Appreciation Day 2023

This Squirrel Appreciation Day, Robyn Stewart shares some facts about Scotland's red squirrels.

Scotland is home to around 75% of the UK's red squirrels

They are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List for Great Britain.

Their decline is thought to be down to a number of factors, such as habitat loss and fragmentation, disease, and being outcompeted by non-native grey squirrels

Red squirrel are tree-dwellers and thrive in the native Caledonia pine forests of Scotland. They can live in both conifer and broadleaf woodland.

Some of the best places to see red squirrel are in forests around Aberfoyle and Abernethy. You have an excellent chance of seeing them at RSPB Scotland Loch Garten nature reserve at squirrel feeders.

Red squirrels eat nuts and seeds - mainly pine, spruce and larch. Squirrels often leave pine cones on the forest floor which have distinctive gnaw marks which show they are present even if you don't see the animals themselves.

RSPB Scotland are partners in the Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels project, a Scotland-wide project aiming to conserve red squirrel populations.

People can help the project by recording their sightings at scottishsquirrels.org.uk
