RSPB Scotland’s Allie McGregor shares some ways to celebrate nature as winter sets in and the holidays approach...
Celebrate nature during the giving season
Eco friendly gifting
There are lots of ways to make your gifting more eco-friendly!
Celebrate nature by seeking out gifts that make the world better for nature. Whether it’s finding plastic free gifts, indulging in your crafty side and making your own gifts, or making sure all your wrapping is fully recyclable.
Use your voice for nature
Celebrate nature by speaking up for it. For many of us this year has highlighted our need for nature more than ever, but we know nature is in trouble.
You can take action for nature by speaking with friends and family, writing to MSPs and taking part in actions online.
If you haven’t already you can add your voice to our campaign to Revive Our World here: https://bit.ly/35UWj8e
Make a difference for nature at home
There are things we can do – big or small – in our own homes to help make space for nature.
If you are lucky enough to have a garden there are lots of ways you can help your garden wildlife such as opening a bird café, building a bug hotel or making a mini pond.
I don’t have a garden, but I take action at home with small things such as putting up a window feeder and reducing my food waste!
Gift a donation or membership
For friends or family that love nature, a gift that directly helps nature can be the perfect thing! You can make a donation on their behalf or get your loved one a membership to help them find more ways to enjoy nature through the year.
You can also make a donation without having to spend a thing – lots of retailers have options to donate to a charity when you make a purchase with them. You can also shop through easyfundraising with hundreds of different stores.
Spend time in nature
With many of us facing Covid restrictions which might limit our trips to our favourite nature places and all of us having to face much colder weather, it definitely feels harder to go out and enjoy nature. Take some time to celebrate wildlife and the outdoors and do something for yourself this season by wrapping up warm and exploring your local nature.
While Scotland’s nature certainly looks different in winter, it is just as incredible and always something to celebrate!
