Seabirds South West is a snapshot of work in the south west region to help seabirds in 2017.

• the conclusion of the active phase of the Isles of Scilly Seabird Recovery Project, how targeted conservation action to remove non-native brown rats has enabled the wonderful recovery of breeding Manx shearwater and storm petrel, and the enthusiastic support and participation of all residents on St Agnes and Gugh in this, and how resident volunteers have taken on a major role in biosecurity monitoring to ensure that the islands remain rat-free.
• how a team of surveyors, including volunteers, found that more than 10 years after removal of rats on Lundy, numbers of puffins are increasing and other seabird species including guillemot, razorbill and fulmar are doing well too.
• new legal protection for two marine areas in the region – Fal Bay to St Austell Bay SPA and extension to Poole Harbour SPA.
• continuing recovery of breeding little terns on Chesil Beach, Dorset with the highest ever number of chicks recorded fledging since 2008, and the important role of volunteers in this annual nest protection project.
