Dr Graeme Buchanan will be taking up the role of Head of International Conservation Science.

We are delighted to announce that Dr Graeme Buchanan will be taking up the role of Head of International Conservation Science, leading the exceptional conservation science team working to support RSPB and Birdlife International’s conservation work.

Dr Graeme

Graeme is well placed to take up this role, having worked for RSPB’s International Conservation Science team for almost 15 years. During this time, he has led or collaborated on a wide range of research, especially focused on land cover, site-based conservation, and species distributions. His experience on the use of satellite remote sensing saw him co-edit a book on the topic, published in 2018. Prior to this, he worked on UK upland research and overseas on practical species conservation projects.

Graeme has developed global collaborations and influence and works closely with Birdlife International and the wider family of Cambridge Conservation Initiative partners. He has lived and worked overseas in multiple countries, including two years based at the EC Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, while working for the RSPB. Graeme serves in an editorial capacity for the journals Bird Conservation International and Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, and was elected to serve on the British Ornithologists’ Union Council from 2014-2018.

Graeme said: “It’s a huge privilege to be asked to head the talented, respected, and motivated international team. I’m also looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to the wider work of RSPB Centre for Conservation Science beyond the international team and developing new and existing collaborations within the BirdLife Partnership and beyond. These are important times for international conservation, particularly with the Convention on Biological Diversity meeting coming up next year which will decide the next ten-year goals for nature. It’s an exciting time to be working in this field.”
