Derby County are having a good run in the Championship at the moment, pride is booming at Pride Park (overlooking the Chelsea result at the weekend in the FA cup of course).

But its not activity on the pitch that is the subject of this blog, within sight of the stadium and with in hearing of the goal celebrations is a place that, just a few year’s ago was the cause of pride to Derby City Council and joy to local people when the Sanctuary was declared a Local Nature Reserve.

Now there is a risk that time is running out for the Sanctuary and the wildlife that lives there as Derby City Council threaten to trash their own nature reserve to build a cycle track – nothing wrong with cycle tracks in the right place.

This matters because it is in the gift of Local Authorities to declare Local Nature Reserves and for Derby City Council to backtrack on its commitment could set a worrying precedent.

The consultation closes soon (12 Jan) and already many have objected to the proposal including ourselves. Read more here from the Derbyshire Ornithological Society and the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. Here’s some back ground in the local press.

There is still time for you to email your objection – here’s the link to do it mailto:developmentcontrol@derby.gov.uk

.If Pride Park is not become a landscape of broken promises – Derby City Council needs to think again.
