A year on and...

Well its a year on since i set my feeders up in the current property and i realy cant believe what success ive had. I thought i may do well being in a semi rural location but its open my eyes to birds i havnt seen since i was a child and some species never before. Ive still held that childhood interest but since setting up said feeders in my first proper garden im now keener than ever. In this same year i have joined the RSPB (whilst at Bempton Cliffs reserve) and can honestly say i will remain a member forever.

  • Excellent!  I must admit I don't get as much time as I'd like to watch the feeders to see what turns up but I still get pleasure from seeing all the usual suspects turning up.

    Cheers

    Stoat

  • In reply to Stoat:

Oh yeah, and meant to ask, what species have you seen?

  • In reply to doggie:

Thanks all, fraid im still very much in the infancy of photography with wildlife so when i get a little better i shall post some...as regards to species it may be bread and butter to some but i was most stunned to see a G S Woodpecker in winter which came back a month or so ago feeding a fledgling! I also had never seen a Sprawk and that now visits on occasions, but the most recent and regular visitor is a Nuthatch which has suprised me because there arnt many large trees immediate to me! But all in all i love having all types coming and having Sparrows, Dunnocks, Starlings, Tits and Finches etc i will never take them for granted

  • In reply to doggie:

Too right and after reading the Simon Barnes books/ RSPB mags i cant belive how birds like Starlings and Sparrows have declined!

  • In reply to doggie:

Yeah we dont do too bad here either but at my parents house (bout 10 min drive) where i grew up (in the 1980's) we used to have lots of both. Now because of me getting them back into it and they have started feeding again we have realised only about 3 starlings ever visit...and not 1 Sparrow :(

  • In reply to doggie:

I get plenty of both too but definitely not as many around as when I was a kid.  I had to have my roof done earlier in the year and was worried the sparrows would be off when it was done but there still seems to be plenty around and they've now got some smart new nest boxes to use if they don't fancy the gaps under the new tiles!

  • In reply to Stoat:

Nice move Stoat, thats my next plan maybe Spring to go for a nest box. The previous owners of the house left one in the garden which was very run down, i couldnt belive when Blue tits started checking it out! Next year il get a brand new RSPB one and see if i can get a brood.

  • In reply to doggie:

Right il get on it thanks for that doggie. Il try get some photos on of that Nuthatch soon too!

  • In reply to doggie:

Ok i have a VERY poor one of the G S woodpecker for proof too so il post them after hols.
