It was all Corvid action today with no less than 50 Jackdaws/Magpies/Crows/Jays around the garden so whilst the Magpies and Jackdaws were busy searching and eating the seeds and food put out for them I grabbed the camera and took three video clips around the pond area that I combined showing mainly the Magpies standing at the edge of the pond trying to lift out the floating duck food that had drifted to the side ! and at the end a quick pan to show just a small selection of Jackdaws !
I will also add a few more update pictures of the young Jackdaw from the "Some Mother's Do 'ave 'em" thread who is still giving his Mum a hard time begging for food all the time, he flaps his wings as he calls out !! Today he was so persistent he drove his parents crazy - he even landed both feet on the Mother's back in an attempt to get her attention - a pity I didn't get that little episode on camera.
Anyway, here is the video first
and now the persistent but adorable little Jackdaw junior !
even one of his two siblings is now joining in, learning bad habits lol
think Mum is beginning to go deaf in her left ear lol
and did he get fed ?........... yes ! of course he did, she is a great parent :) as is Dad

Great shots and vid Hazel, though I must admit to not being very enamoured to the magpies lately!I have a delinquent family gang that has removed my fatball feeder three times, and done off with the booty before I wirelocked it to the hanger, as well as that they have now discovered that if they shake the seed feeder they'll spill out and be easy to scoff. I had to wire that up too as they kept knocking it off, and just now I've found it on the ground with the handle snapped!! Having said that they are lovable rogues, bad as Cyrils Lol

LOL Terry, it sounds just like the Cyrils who can even prise a tight fitting lid off the feeder to get to the not so squirrel proof contents ! They are so frustrating and annoying at times but I just can't help but laugh at their antics and the lengths they will go to .......... I still prefer the Magpies and Jackdaws over the Cyrils though !!

Seems like you have a few ruffians in your garden Hazy! I love your feisty young jackdaw chick! You seem to attract all the trouble makers lol!!!!! I only get a couple of magpies otherwise it's finches all the way here - at present my garden is full of goldfinch, chaffinch and greenfinch and their chicks! It seems ages since I took photos of the garden birds - about time I remedied that!!

Lovely pics yet again, Hazel--thanks! Fifty corvids! Good grief--good thing you have such a large garden! We have only lived here for just over a quarter century but only had our first Crow and Jackdaws in the back garden in the last 2 weeks! It must have been the dozens of Starlings coming and going and chattering (first Starlings here in over 2 decades!) which caught their attention. And fortunately, our 2 Cyrils have been very well behaved, sticking to raiding only 2 sunflower hearts feeders, so I try to keep those stocked up to discourage them from exploring the rest--LOL!
Terry, Funniest thing, your mention of the Magpies removing your feeders. Here, something (Crow or Jackdaw or?) has been trying to remove one of our suet log feeders, but so far has not succeeded, just moving it along the branch of the feeder pole. I doubt that the Squirrels are at fault since there are several unmoved suet feeders closer to the sunflower hearts feeders which they frequent every day. I am still waiting to catch the culprit in action, though I have tied down all similar feeders or placed them in tight corners where a larger bird might have trouble getting to them. My guess is it is not the Magpies since we have had a family (or 2) for several years and no feeders have been disturbed until after I saw the first Crow and Jackdaw in the last couple of weeks.
Kind regards, Ann

Thanks Christine and Ann, it's like having a gangster mob in the garden at the moment lol but its my own fault as I am giving them extra seeds now the juveniles are around; got to say I rather like the Corvids, they are super clever and very funny to watch !
@ Ann, it sounds like you need one of those auto wildlife cameras that self activates on any movement so you can find out who the culprit is lol ! I'd put my money on the Cyrils if it was happening in my garden !!
Hazel, A camera is a good idea, though I'm not sure where we would put it. I forgot to mention that the last 2 times the suet log feeder was moved, it was empty and had been empty for several days since I decided not to refill that one for now, having 3 others elsewhere! Our back garden is small--only slightly over 10X10 metres, so surely the culprit could see the other FULL feeders! What/who would be clever enough to try to steal a feeder, but stupid enough to try to remove an EMPTY feeder when there were other feeders (filled with suet logs!) available to easily steal instead?!
Maybe it wanted nesting material lol !! sounds like a large Crow to me !!
