I have just replaced my old hedgehog feeding station with a new one.
With this one I have kept the lid on the bottom and put a sheet of newspaper on it to make cleaning a bit easier.
The new station is much clearer and I can see my hedgehogs better!
The tunnel is in an effort to stop the local cats from getting a free meal.
I had wondered how long it would take for the hedgehogs to use it,the answer is 2 minutes!!!
I had just come inside and took a quick look out the window and it was already in use.
The hedgehog is small and possibly not heavy enough to get through a winter but I am putting food and water out and it has made a nest in the hog house on the patio so hopefully I can get it through the winter.
It is an 'unmarked' hog and it has been around for a couple of weeks. My 2 marked hedgehogs have paint identification marks so I know who is visiting but these have been absent for a while.
Anyway here is a pic of the new station in use.
And he (she?) has just come back for a second helping!!!
That's a good idea MP, and the hog looks to be enjoying its meal. Mine is coming twice a night too, (if it's the same one that is) it seems to come early as it goes out and about and then later on its way home....maybe, that's just me guessing.
The see-through box is a great idea, mp. The photo is excellent, even through the plastic. Looks like it can pile on the pounds with your good grub, and it doesn't have far to go to get it!
Looking out at the feeding station this evening there were TWO small hoggies!
They are both around the same size so maybe siblings?
Very ingenious.
Fabulous, mp! Maybe they are siblings from a second brood. I guess they'll want to eat & eat to get up to hibernating weight.
Your set-up is great, mp- we didn't have the wooden entry-way and the foxes got the plastic box out from under 4 bricks! Maybe not being able to smell the food in the box makes a difference?
And two beauties! I'm envious!
I put out some meal worms and water last night but won't be able to check it until tomorrow. Hoping foxes don't like meal worms.
Do they mind it when you take a photo?
And, what are you feeding them?
The hogs don't seem to mind me taking a photo. They have a keen sense of smell but their eyesight is not so good so when they are in the box they seem unaware of me outside!
If I do encounter them in the garden they usually just stand still and pretend they are not there and then scuttle off when I move away.
I feed them a mixture of Go-cat (the meat ones but never fish),dried mealworms, peanut granules and sunflower hearts.
I have noticed over the last few days that they eat everything in the bowl except the red coloured pieces of Go-cat,maybe they are just fussy!!
Also a bowl of fresh water.
Yesterday I put out a mashed up boiled egg but they didn't touch that either.
I did actually feed one dried mealworms by hand once,it couldn't resist, was really lovely!:)
Was in the garage just now getting the food ready for the hedgehogs dinner tonight and found myself taking out all the red bits of Go-cat that they don't like. How's that for dedication to hedgehog care!!!!!
lol, mp! I wonder what's in those bits?
