I've just picked up a couple of small hexagonal planters without drain holes (about 1 1/2ft across) and put in a dwarf water lily (from here www.gardeningexpress.co.uk/water-lilies) in each as well as a couple of other plants. If you add an oxygenator or 2 that should create reasonable water quality.

My mini water features
Only 3 plants per pot at the moment. I may put more in depending on how the dwarf lily spreads and what the water quality's like.
This is called the 'Babbling Boulders' water feature by Gardman, It was about £180 but well worth the money (it was a Birthday present for BR).

Here's a young BT using it. I use a small fish tank net to scoop the fallen leaves out each day and top it up when hosing the garden. I change the water completely every couple of weeks, although much of it is splashed out by the birds when they bathe...

Thanks Sharon. It wasn't exactly cheap, but given the small size of my garden it is ideal in terms of size, practicality and maintenance. You cannot tell from the above videos but there is also an LED in the pool section that illuminates the bottom half. Well worth the money! Easy to put together as well.

I have looked at them in gardens centres, yes they are pricey but well worth the hours of fun the birds will have bathing in it, and I am sure it is worth every penny, it must look very effective at night when illuminated too :)
I bought mine online. Worth every penny!
