Our female great tit is roosting with her 8 chicks now 3 days old. She’s spent at least 45 minutes incessantly pecking into the sides of the nest, turning round and round. I thought she might be picking out bugs. Now I wonder whether she’s somehow making the edges more compact to widen the hole. Poor chicks aren’t getting a wink of sleep!!! What is she doing?
Are you able to post footage? Presumably, both adults are feeding the young?
Unfortunately, I can't get footage from the telly: it creates weird lines across the screen. I'm pretty sure now that she's getting bugs out of the nest most of the time but she's so energetic with it, it's amazing she doesn't hurt the young. Sometimes she's lunging into the bowl of the nest, sometimes pecking hard into the edges just below the rim. They look like two slightly different activities.
