Pigeons nesting - when can the tree come down?

In the garden we've recently acquired there's an overgrown Christmas tree about 20-30 feet high and we're pretty sure that wood pigeons nest there.  The tree must be felled, it's too near the house and spreading.  Is there a good time of year to do it without destroying the wood pigeons' nests?

We live next to a wooded area so there are other nesting sites for them in future.
