Looking around it is amazing to see how many buddleias have all but finished flowering already, this got me looking around to see what other late summer blooms are about that attract insects. Verbenas and lavender are still buzzing, heather is now coming into its best and Michaelmas daisies should be out for good few weeks still. Has anyone else got any plants that are currently looking their best and attracting in lots of life?

My perennial border has been planted to give strong colour and nectar rich plants at this time of the year (Aug/Sept) when a lot of other things have gone over.....
My planting includes A few of the 'large' varieties of Verbena and different Rudbekia varities which I have found over the years work extremely well together and attracts masses of different bees and butterflies really late into the season.....
The mixes of plants in these photographs work really well for me and are generally alive with insect, bee and butterfly life right to the end of the season

Out of interest, what sorts of butterflies have you noticed in the last few weeks, many people have been saying how few there have been, although i've noticed a few more gatekeepers, small coppers and whites in the last day or two...

I have been really lucky this year and had lots of different varieties of butterflies and can honestly say that this has been my best year so far for both numbers and species!

In march I sowed some wild flowers. The Tansy started flowering in late August and alougth delighted by how pretty it was, I was sorely disapointed that it was being snubbed by the pollinaters. However now more of it is open it has started to get attention and I got its 1st customer on film:
It kept returning to the Tansy to feed. I had also planted Common Sorrel nearby but It looks a bit dry and tatty, so I try not to get my hopes up for a bumper crop of Small Coppers next year
