Dog hair

Can I compost dog hair?  I have a huge amount of it and I do put it in nest balls and leave some out and about but it is even too much for the birds to deal with

  • Thank for that Doggie, I will stop putting it in the rubbish and put it to some use.

Funny you should say that.......I have been trying to find someone to spin it for me but no joy as yet.  I keep joking about sending a dog coat made of leo hair to my brother for his dog in Norway.

  • Hi Caroline,

There's an Association of Guilds of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers and they have a website www.wsd.org.uk . There you will find a list of local Guilds etc. and I'm sure someone will be happy to spin your hair - well at least your dog's hair!

    Good luck!

As for composting - remember that anything organic can be composted - some stuff takes longer than others but a good mix layered in your bin/ heap will breakdown especially if it is kept moist. Of course the best way of keeping it moist is to remember the old "piss pot" and tip the contents in. We have sadly lost the understanding of the value of urine. It heals skin complaints, prepares wool for dyeing, accelerates compost,  and much more and was so well used in various industries that poor people in the 19th. century could sell the contents of the family's piss pot for a fair price!! Imagine the health and safety implications of that one!!! :)

  • Jenni, thank you for that link, I will research further.

I do a variety of different compost bins etc but have a mental block over dog hair.

  • I put my dogs hair into the bin along with everything else lol. Shredded paper veg peelings the contents from the vacuum tea bags etc anything that will break down.  Like the thought of Rooney and the p*** pot. My hubby always says " my brother had a transplant on his head he looked a bugger with a kidney on it boom boom
