Budgie, I find your picture truly wonderful. From an old gnarled, yet beautiful, tree trunk, new life springs.

It always fascinates me how some plants find the oddest places to take root.  Thanks for showing your photograph.

Fascinating,the seed must have been dropped on the old stump by a bird and it has grown from there.

What a great tree, elderberry is such an opportunist and I agree that a bird dropped the seed with a little added fertilizer. Great:-)

Thanks for the comments everybody. I once went to Corsica and saw a tree growing out of a solid rock. I will see if I can find the photo and post it later.

Rain runs down the rock bringing just enough in the way of minerals and nutrients with it - I agree that what trees can survive in is incredible. Look at buddleia (sp) it'll grow out of a bit of cement or mortar in a chimney stack. It doesn't take long for nature to take over an abandoned building site, bomb site, quarry or a site blasted by fire. Apparently there's a book called (I believe) 'Edgelands' (god old Radio 4) that's about the the apparently abandoned land on the edge of towns and the land on industrial estates between those giant prefab type buildings, they look like wasteland but what grows and lives there is amazing - largely because they are relatively undisturbed, nobody thinks to 'tidy' such areas.
