Went for a walk with Himself and our old boy yesterday in this country house park opened to the public until Sept next year (some deal with DEFRA) anyway, it's a classic parkland of it type, set in stunning countryside with lakes and wildfowl to go with it - saw 10 fluffy duckling - nice. But what REALLY surprised me is that there were bluebells in bloom at the edge of the woodland bit that's private - we were enchanted by carpets of these stunning flowers and also more carpets of dog violets and primroses. Apparently a combination of an arctic December, warm February (could have fooled me - brrrr) and a dry March has brought the bluebells into bloom really early. I usually insist on a bluebell wood walk in May - looks as if I will have to bring my schedule forward if I want to see and smell them at their very best:-)))
Hi Chip
A carpet of bluebells must be my most favourite woodland sight of all.
No sign of them here yet but I can't wait!!! My friend in Epsom takes me to a wonderful bluebell wood (somewhere) every time I'm staying at this time of year.
Your walk sounded very beautiful and enjoyable.

Hi kezsmum
How lovely to see bluebells so early. Lucky you. :-)
My friend has a farm and it includes a woodland area with plenty of bluebells, so I'm looking forward to seeing them this year.
Best wishes Chris

A carpet of bluebells must be one of the the best sights there is, and I can't wait for them to flower here. They are up and showing promise, but no floweres yet. Lucky you Kezsmum to have seen them so early.

Feeling More Positive :-)
Although bluebells are lovely to see, I'm not too sure if it's lovely to see them this early... apparently, they are flowering a month earlier than it used to....

You're right, Tern, I would normally expect to do my bluebell viewing in May (always make a point of it), the ones in the woods here aren't flowering yet. It could be a sign of global warming, but also the very cold December, the 'mild' February and the dry March are sited as reasons but WHY we've had such unusual weather is another question. We do tend vary a bit from year to year in Britain but global warming may well be another thing to factor in - deep sigh! We humans have such a lot to answer for when it comes to this poor old planet, we can only hope that awareness helps us to adjust things enough so that the plants, creatures and young people of the future(not necessarily in that order) have a good quality of life:-) It is a worry though:-( Meanwhile, all I can do is enjoy the bluebells, be an environmentally friendly gardener and try to keep my carbon footprint to a bare minimum - all of which I try to do with varying degrees of success.
Well this is a blast from the past I must say ! I went to Shobrook Park once a year as a child when the cricket team Dad played for had a fixture against Shobrook. The Shobrook cricket pitch was in the grounds of Shobrook Park & the day always included a walk round the place with Mum. I must seek it out again & pay a visit with little madam.
Lovely to hear that you've seen bluebells already. I have some out in the garden & they've been around about a week...we've never planted them but they've always been here because we're next to a wood

Yes. we have them in our garden but not in flower yet, budding up nicely though. Shobrook Park is lovely isn't it? If you decide to bring young madam let me know if you want to, we could meet up - if the mood takes you. If not, that's fine too:-) It's a nice cricket ground. Did your dad also play at Creedy Park? There's a cricket club there too.
Wooo Whooo Bluebells already up in Devon, even more to look forward when we get down there, only the leaves showing here at the moment I just love the smell from bluebells in woodland it always takes me back to my childhood. When I was young we used to camp out in the local woods but i would not let my boys do it nowadays its such a shame really but at least we get out as a family as much as possible :o).
Thanks for sharing your walk out
Shane
