My OH is useless - seriously! He was left with the task of putting up the gate, shouldn't be too difficult. He did it the other day, sent me a text to say job done but I go into the garden today and the latch falls off the wall! The gap between the gate and the latch is too wide, and the gate just pushes the latch up. Looks like I'll have to sort it myself on my next day off! The fix should be easy enough - bit of wood, attach latch to wood, attach wood to wall and have the latch so it's attached the other way so it actually works properly. Hopefully I'll be able to drill deep enough holes in the wall. Means I'll be raiding my log pile for some flat pieces of wood that were thrown behind there, glad I kept them!

Hi Kat
I've heard of a saying: When you want something doing properly, do it yourself. :-)
This might be a plan. :-)
Best wishes Chris

Are you sure, KatTai, that as soon as you get the tools out your OH won't snatch them from your grasp to show you 'how to do it properly?' Despite the fact that he has already demonstrated the fact that he doesn't know. If he does this, do try to restrain yourself from planting a heavy object between his ears, we need you here:-))
Hi Kat, I am not sure if this is one of those moments when you don't know whether to laugh or cry.
I agree with Chris, as maybe he thinks you won't ask him to do anything again. I am sure you will have a good laugh about it though.................... In time.
When I went away and thought about it, your story reminded me of a time when I was away from home playing in a bridge competition over a weekend.
My OH had decided that he was going to put a telephone on the kitchen wall, and it wasn't completely straight forward, because it needed an electrical socket as well as a phone socket.
We already had a phone socket because we had had a phone there before. So he needed to take a spur off an electrical socket in the utility room, and it wasn't that difficult a job because that socket was on an interior stud wall that adjoined the kitchen.
Anyway, so there I was in between bridge sessions, and I gave him a quick call to see if he was OK.
I remember clearly that he said 'I have the electrician here, and he's just finishing off plastering the wall.' So I asked 'Why on earth is an electrician plastering the wall?'
Well the story was that as he had drilled a hole through the wall from the utility room to the kitchen, he had drilled through the mains cable connecting the garage electric supply to the house electric supply, and had blown the electrics in the whole house. He was lucky he hadn't electrocuted himself! In mitigation he said the electrician thought that the mains cable was in a ridiculous place where it never should have been.
The moral of this story is, if you're going to mess around with electrics, you should always use a cable detector. :-)

Haha that was how we used to get my dad to do the decorating - start doing the work and he'd come in and take over! But at least my dad could decorate, it's his job lol
I've half-fixed it myself - attached the latch to some salvaged wood, nailed wood into wall. Need some longer nails or exterior no more nails for a proper fixing but it's on for now and the gate is closing properly. Doesn't look great with a bit of old wood attached to the wall but hey ho it will do!
I think it was a mistake buying him a tool box for Christmas, though at least I know where the tools are!
Woodpecker - what a story about your hubby! Wonder how many other call outs that electrician has had from optimistic DIYers, definately a case of DON'T Do It Yourself!

Today is not a day for me finding badly done jobs, he's already in the bad books today so now he's in the badder bad books! Though I am quite pleased with myself for sorting it out myself, must be the hammer and nail therapy!
