Mystery plant

There is something growing up right through where I planted one of my rhubarb plants!  I have no idea what it is, but I'm assuming it is a bulb of some kind as it looks like the other bulbs that are coming up.  That part of the garden was buried beneath the conifer hedge last year and I never knew there were other plants there, never seen anything growing in the hedge and the bulb must have been pretty deep as I didn't dig anything up when digging in the garden!  There are now lots and lots of little green spikes coming up out of the ground.  Wonder what it will turn out to be?

  • I've just found this link to a site that says you can make the bulbs into a flour? and cook with them. Not sure whether I am brave enough to do it though lol.

Birds would have dropped the seed - cuckoopint or Lords and Ladies have juicy red berries in autumn...

I suppose that is possible, the blackbirds like using the hedge though I'm still puzzled at how it ended up so deep, unless I inadvertantly buried the seeds deeper when I was planting my rhubarb but then surely the seeds would be spread all over not in just one patch???  Will see how they are doing today. Must admit, couldn't care less about the rhubarb as this mystery plant is certainly proving to be interesting!

  • There's another clump of this coming up too now, the original clump is MASSIVE I don't think the rhubarb stands a chance of breaking out through that lot!  Will get some new photos of it, as it's grown a bit it might help comfirm it's identity!

  • Hi Kat yes you will probably get lots of it but the rhubarb should be O K the L & L it soon seems to die off, think of the bonus of you are now a bit more knowledgable.Always thought there was hardly anything you did not have a lot of knowledge of,hope your paving slabs clean, hee hee.

    Be very careful Kat!!

You don't want to end up like this. LOL

  • Your bulbs look to me like Erythroniums{Trout Lily} and the variety could be Pagoda.Ours are at the leaf stage plus they have flower spikes just begining to show and they won't be long before they are in flower.

Please keep us posted as they progress as they are a truly beautiful plant and you are lucky to have them as a freebie in your garden although they would be better not growing in the middle of the rhubarb...

Chris - no I've never planted anything there, it is right at the edge of the hedge now and before would have been 2-3 feet deep in the hedge as it was only cut back last autumn and that's the first time it's been done since I've lived here.  I've never even seen anything growing back there so it is a complete mystery especially as I dug it all over when I was creating the new bed.

The possibility is that because there was very little/no light under the hedge nothing would have grown anyway and now you've cut the hedge they've got more light so they're now growing again.

If only I could be free as the birds the places I could visit would be out of this world
