Allotments

Hi there

I was watching One Show last night and there was an article about allotments

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007tcw7

The issue on the programme stated that there are large price increases for people who want to have an allotment now and in the future.

It takes gardening on a new level, and I always thought of Allotments as a bonus to anyone in life if they want to do some gardening - especially if they are keen on wildlife and helping wildlife.

Anyone got an Allotment here?

Regards

Kathy and Dave

  • Like doggie and many others we have a veg beds at the bottom of the garden.  My OH is a keen vegetable grower which is great for me.

Our local parish council sent out a letter asking if anyone was interested in an allotment, and apparently no one was.  Perhaps they were afraid of the waiting lists............

December 21st is a great day - the sun starts to come back to us and spring is in the air!

  • I have started growing my own, it was almost inevitable to be honest!

Grew beetroot, carrots and lettuce last year. I got given a potato bin for Xmas, so looking forward to giving that a go! ;o)

My brother inherited the green fingers!

Hey Ant, any chance you could  get that recipe from your mum for spicy apple pie.??  ;-)

I nearly took on an allotment a few years ago, it was in a terrible state, with trees that needed removing.

Would have been a lot of work and some expense just to get it ready for planting, the rep was quite upbeat about the site, but i had a walk around and spoke to some other plot holders who were telling me thefts and vandalism were getting so worse that some pot holders where starting to abandon the site. I saw evidence of this, crops rotting in the ground, sheds broken open and abandoned.

Gave up on the idea and started growing some veg at home, a raised bed and a cleared area, went well for a few years, even saw an escaped parrot eating my sweetcorn cobs once.

It got to the point were theoutput was seriously outweighed buy the amount of effort i was putting in, watering so much and a poor harvest when i could buy better stuff for cheaper, usually from farmers markets.  So i slowly turned my veg area into a wildlife area, with logs, rocks, wildflowers, native species, wildlife pond etc, bird feeders etc...

Still have the raised plot full of strawberries, and several fruit bushes in containers, and of course the greenhouse for toms & Cues.  More than enough for now.

Prefer the Butterflies, Bees, Birds and frogs etc... to carrots with root fly and bolted Garlic.
