On Sunday I decided to plant my new tree,a Rowan 'Chinese Lace'.
I had to cut back a couple of shrubs to accomodate it untill it grows a bit bigger. Then I had to dig a hole,in slightly claggy clay that is not easy,I was also positioned kneeling under the eleagnus as there was not much space to manouvere and using a variety of hand trowel and fork as i could not use a full size spade in the space!
I filled a bucket with the soil and had to clamber out from under the bush to empty it into the wheelbarrow, except I had forgotten to get said wheelbarrow out of the garage!
As I was bringing the barrow out through the garage side door my ankle gave way and I fell heavily and ended up spawled next to the dustbin where I lay for a while wondering what part of myself I had broken.
On finding I was in one piece I staggered into the house where my daughter cleaned up the nasty graze on my elbow and I had a lie down for a bit.Thought I would have lunch before returning to finish planting but while eating the heavens opened and that was my gardening finished for the day!
On Tuesday the weather had improved enough for me to continue and finally got the tree in place.I dug a good size hole but what I found was that however much soil I dug out it never seemed to get any deeper!
Here is my tree in place,it has some buds and my bruises will probably be gone by the time they get into leaf!

It's not always easy to hug a hedgehog.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't.
Oh you poor thing, !!!!!
i hope your bruises & grazes heal soon,
after all that hard work though your tree looks very much at home there

Hi Rachel
Look to the future for waxwings.

Oh dear Rachel, poor you, and I'm sorry but I had to laugh. (Really sorry!!) I hope the grazes and bruises go pretty soon. The tree looks at home, and fingers crossed it survives the clay soil.
Cheers, Linda.

Talk about suffering for your birds - when they are stuffing their beaks I hope they spare a thought for the Great Provider, but I don't s'pose they will - sigh:-( Rowans are pretty trees and I hope it grows beautifully to reward you for the effort you made:-) Well done you.
Rowans are nice trees, by the look of its position, your neighbours are going to be getting a lot of it as well.
Oh dear that sounds like a nasty fall. I hope that your cuts and bruises heal up very soon. :-)
You have done a great job with the Rowan though. It looks great! I hope it grows well and has loads of berries on it at the end of the year. :-)
Best wishes Chris

Hi Rach,
Sounded like quite an eventful planting session you had there!
Would love to see some pictures of it as it develops and puts on leafs, flowers, berries etc?? There is so much talk about Rowan trees on here that I'm thinking that I should invest in a couple myself....
Hi all and thanks for your kind words,I will milk just a little more sympathy by saying I also wrenched my ankle in the fall!!
I will take photos of the tree as it develops,I don't expect much to happen this year as it will be settling itself in.
Had a bluetit sitting on it this morning so looks like it is being accepted!
Oh dear! poor Rachel x
Still, it looks very nice there with its own little space to grow into.
Cheers
