Gardens throughout the year

I thought it my be interesting to have a thread showing our gardens and the way they change throughout the year.  Here's mine looking a bit of a mess at the moment -

I di leave most of it uncut over winter to give the insects more places to spend the winter - well thats my excuse - I was probably just being lazy.

Best wishes

This our main flower area.  Its a bit rough but I quite like it like that.  You can also see my amateurish efforts at a pergola.  Even tough its not very straight I'm quite proud of it as I worked out a way of putting it up myself and I'm no great handyman!

And buddleia corner.  Not many butterflies around at the moment even though there are loads at work.

  • Right that's the arduous bit of uploading the photos done!  Never quite seem to get it right first time!

I think what happened with the wildflower area probably that the soil is too fertile and its not in a sunny enough place.  The first year I did it it actually worked quite well but I did really rake the grass back hard first and it was quite a sunny summer.  Ever since we hva had damp summers.  As a last throw of the dice I tried a raised bed this year but I don't think the seeds were that good.  I will get some plug plants for the bank by my pond next year.  Its made up of the sub soil from when I dug the pond and the grass doesn't seem to thrive so much on it.

    Cheers

  • Nice one Stoat, it looks like there is plenty of interest for all the creepies and crawlies that we all strive to attract! Like my garden there is plenty of different areas and hidey holes for your kids to explore by the looks of it. My little one loves running around and hiding, making dens etc....

  • Charlie likes getting his toy diggers in any loose soil he can find which doesn't bode well for the un turfed part of the new lawn!

  • You'll have to buy him a tipper truck with a box of grass seed to carry in the back.....

    Hi Stoat and Higgy

I am loving this thread and your photos are fabulous ..and the gardens are kid friendly - they will love it

It is good to see how the OH lives on here.  As a young person we had a sandpit we loved a lot too - great fun!...not much use for wildlife though.

Love the idea of the wild flowers - we had a wild flower meadow and it worked for a while until we moved on to another house

Just one of the things we have to deal with - we get comfortable in a garden then we move for whatever reason

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Hi Kathy,

Thanks for the kind comments, my plan for my garden before I started it was that it would be interesting, child friendly and attract wildlife. I'm working hard to achieve this but still have a long way to go!

It's a shame that you have to move on so regularly, I have to admit that I like my roots set firmly in place then I can surround myself with all that interests and excites me!...

Thats actually not a bad idea!  He has got a few toy diggers on one part of the new bit and I've got some grass seed left over.  If I put a pile of that done he can move it around with the diggers and some of it may get to grow!
