With Christmas coming and town lights being turned on around the country, I wanted to give a different theme to Kidwelly’s parade with Santa. Working with four local schools we made willow and paper lanterns which they decorated with colourful silhouettes of local wildlife. They were illuminated with candles and lit the street with a river of light. it was spectacular!
The dormouse project is proceediing apace. the project will see 50 dormouse boxes made from locally sourced larch and installed on the SSSI at Llangyndeyrn mountain,Carmarthenshire. I met up with some Natural Resource Wales (NRW) officers last week who hold dormouse licenses. Yes, it’s true, you have to have a license to monitor and handle them as not only are they very cute little creatures, but are also on the European Protected Species list. We were looking at appropriate sites within the SSSI at Llangyndeyrn Mountain to install them and I shall be recruiting volunteers to help make the boxes in kit form. Children from Llangyndeyrn, Bancffosfelen and Pontyberem primary schools will then assemble them. I’m also hoping to set up a monitoring program with guidance from the licensed NRW staff to give the children the opportunity to study their habitats, food chain and give them a greater sense of understanding of why we need to look after our natural landscape.
