Competition: How would you redesign your outdoor space for wildlife?

Young people, families and schools across Wales are invited to create designs of how they would improve their gardens, school grounds or local outdoor space for wildlife by taking part in our exciting Habitat Explorer competition. #habitatexplorer 

For primary and secondary schools in Wales
  
Enter our competition to win an Outdoor Learning kit for your school by inviting your students to redesign an outdoor space for wildlife. If you are teaching remotely, this activity can be done from home!  

Start using our Habitat Explorer scorecards to invite your pupils to rate how good an outdoor space is for wildlife. Depending on where they are, pupils can score their school grounds, home gardens or even their local street. It’s simple – they just need to tick off the different habitats they can find and add up the scores.  

If your students are at home and don’t have access to a garden and can’t go outside, not to worry, they can still take part! Ask them to imagine their local park or school grounds, or if they can see the street or other gardens from their window.  

The next step is to ask your pupils to draw a picture of how they would improve the space to provide additional habitats and support more wildlife. To enter, simply take a picture of the favourite design from your class and submit your details through this online form for schools.   

For young people and families  

Enter our competition to win an Outdoor Learning kit for your family by showing us how your children would redesign an outdoor space to help wildlife. 

Start by using our Habitat Explorer scorecards to find out how many habitats you already have in your garden. If your family are at home and don’t have access to a garden, not to worry, you can still take part! Ask your children to imagine the local park or school grounds, or even look out the window and survey your street. It’s simple – they just need to tick off the different habitats they can find and add up the scores.

Prizes  

Primary and secondary schools   

Entries from schools will be judged in the following categories; Foundation phase, Key stage 2, Key stage 3 and Key stage 4.  

The winner of each category will receive an Outdoor Learning kit for their class. This will include bug pots, binoculars, magnifying glasses and ID guides. All entrants will receive an e-certificate for taking part. 

Young people and families  

Entries from young people will be judged in the following categories: 

Under 3, age 3-5, Age 6-7, age 8-10, age 11-13 and age 14-16. 

The winner of each category will receive a prize of an Outdoor Learning kit for their household. This will include bug pots, binoculars, magnifying glasses and ID guides. All entrants will receive a e-certificate for taking part.

This competition is managed by the Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff project, which is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. This is a partnership project led by RSPB Cymru, Cardiff Council and Buglife Cymru.  

 
Competition rules  

1. The competition is open to all Welsh residents aged under 16 and Foundation Phase, Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 classes in Wales, except any employee of or person directly connected with the RSPB and their immediate family members. Proof of age may be required.  
   
   
2. Applicants under 16 must get consent from their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) before entering the competition.  The parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of applicants under 16 agree to the Rules and Terms and Conditions on behalf of the applicants. 
   
   
3. The competition is free to enter and no purchase is necessary. 
   
   
4. All entries must be submitted by completing the relevant online submission form for either a school or family submission. For schools, one entry is permitted per class, and for families, one entry is permitted per child.   
   
   
5. The RSPB must receive entries by midnight on July 31 2020. Any entry which is late, incomplete or inappropriate will be deemed invalid at the discretion of the RSPB. 
   
   
6. The RSPB accepts no responsibility for any technical failure, malfunction or any other problem with any server, internet access system or otherwise which may result in any entry being lost, corrupted or not properly registered or recorded. No responsibility will be taken for damaged or lost entries. 
   
   
7. The judges shall assess the entries and one winner will be selected per school class category and one winner will be selected per age category in the family competition. The judges’ decisions shall be final.   No correspondence regarding the results will be entered into. 
   
   
8. The winners of each category shall receive an Outdoor Learning kit.  The prize will be sent to the winner by post within 28 days of the winner responding to notification from the RSPB that they have won.   
   
   
9. The winner will be notified by email or telephone (using the details provided at entry) within 1 week of a decision being made and must provide a postal address to claim their prize. If a winner does not respond to the RSPB within 21 days of being notified by the RSPB, then they will forfeit their prize and a replacement winner will be selected from the other applicants. 
   
   
10. The prize is non-exchangeable, non-transferable and no cash alternative is offered.  
    
    
11. The prize is provided by the Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff project.  The RSPB reserves the right to replace the prize with an alternative prize of equal or higher value if necessary.  
    
    
12. The winner's name will be published on RSPB Cymru’s social media channels.

14. The RSPB reserves the right to refuse entry or to refuse to award the prize to anyone in breach of the Rules or the Terms and Conditions or the spirit of the Rules or the Terms and Conditions.   

Terms and Conditions 

1. By submitting an entry, you agree to be legally bound by the Rules and these Terms and Conditions. 
   
   
2. Any entry must be your original work and it must not infringe the rights of third parties including copyright, trade mark, trade secrets, privacy, publicity, personal or proprietary rights.  In addition, all entries must be produced legally without trespassing on any land and no wildlife or habitats should be harmed, put at risk or unduly disturbed in the process. 
   
   
3. Full copyright title shall be retained by the author of any entry. By submitting any entry to the RSPB (including any text, photographs, graphics, video or audio), you grant the RSPB a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive, sub-licensable right and worldwide license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform, display and exercise all publicity rights with respect to your entry, in whole or in part, and/or to incorporate your entry in other works, in any media now known or later developed for the full term of any rights that may exist in your entry, and in accordance with privacy restrictions set out in the RSPB’s Privacy Policy By submitting an entry, you agree to waive any moral rights contained in your entry. Any entry you provide shall be non-confidential. 
   
   
4. By submitting an entry, you agree the RSPB may use the material for any purpose and in anyway it chooses, including, but not limited to, marketing, publicity, advertising and presentations.  
   
   
5. The RSPB (including its subsidiaries, agents or distributors) shall not be liable for any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage or for any costs, claims or demands of any nature whatsoever arising directly or indirectly out of the use of your entry or any part thereof.  
   
   
6. Insofar as is permitted by law, the RSPB (including its subsidiaries, agents or distributors) will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize, except where it is caused by the negligence of the RSPB, its subsidiaries, agents or distributors or that of their employees.  Your statutory rights are not affected.  
   
   
7. You agree to indemnify the RSPB (and its subsidiaries) against any claim from any third party for any breach of the Rules or these Terms and Conditions. 
   
   
8. The RSPB reserves the right to update the Rules and these Terms and Conditions from time to time and any updated version will be effective as soon as it is published on the RSPB Cymru blog.  
   
   
9. The RSPB takes your privacy very seriously; we will only use your personal information in accordance with the terms of these Terms and Conditions and the RSPB’s Privacy Policy. By submitting an entry, you confirm that you have read and agree to the terms of our Privacy Policy.  
   
   
10. Any personal data submitted will be held securely and in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679. Personal data supplied may be passed on to third party suppliers only insofar as required for fulfilment/delivery/arrangement of the prize.  
    
    
11. The winner may be required to participate in publicity related to the competition which may include the publication of their name and photograph in any media.  You agree that your personal data may be used for this purpose.  
    
    
12. For the avoidance of doubt, by submitting your entry you warrant that all persons featured in your entry have given you their express consent for their image, voice or other details to be used and, in the case of vulnerable adults or persons under 18 years of age, you warrant that you have obtained express consent from their parent(s) or legal guardian(s).  
    
    
13. This competition is governed by English law and English Courts have exclusive jurisdiction.
