Yes, it’s that time of year again where we're asking you to take an hour out of your day to help the nature on your doorstep. Last year, 29,495 of you took part across Wales and we need your help to break the 30,000 barrier this weekend.
And it’s really simple to take part. Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or just looking to enjoy a relaxing moment in nature, Big Garden Birdwatch is an opportunity to get involved in the world’s largest garden wildlife survey and have some fun at the same time.
Across Wales and beyond, birds are facing unprecedented challenges. From habitat loss to climate change, so many of our beloved species are in decline and it’s really important we find out why. This simple activity helps us track the health and populations of all the different bird species visiting our gardens and green spaces, offering vital data to support wildlife conservation efforts. It helps us gain a clearer picture of how garden birds are doing across Wales and helps us make informed decisions about the actions needed to protect them.
But it’s not just about counting birds; it’s about connecting with nature, learning more about the species around us, and becoming part of a nationwide movement that helps protect the wildlife we love. Over the years, Big Garden Birdwatch has become a much-loved tradition for families, nature enthusiasts, and communities – and we want you to be part of it.
Birdwatching is a wonderful way to learn about the nature on your doorstep. Whether you're watching from your living room window or sitting outside with a warm drink, it’s a chance to become more familiar with the different species that visit your outdoor space. You may be surprised by the variety of birds that visit, from the familiar Robin and Blackbird to the more elusive Long-tailed Tit or Goldfinch. Each bird has its own fascinating story to tell!
We’re also strong believers in everyone having the chance to experience the joy and peace of nature. It's an activity for all ages and abilities, and one that can be enjoyed solo, with a friend, as a family, or even with a group of colleagues. It’s also the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of everyday life – connecting with nature can be hugely beneficial for our wellbeing.
Getting involved is free and simple, and you don’t need any special equipment or experience. All you need is an hour of your time and a place to watch birds.
So, this weekend, be a part of something meaningful, and get involved in the world's biggest citizen science project. Make a difference and learn something new by signing up here. Help us make this year’s Birdwatch the most impactful one yet.
