Once again we’re approaching the time for the Big Garden Bird Watch (29-30th January) and this year looks to be even bigger than last year’s amazing 530,000 participants.
I’m sure that lots of us will already have plans for how to spend the hour counting birds (curled up with a cup of tea and a pair of binoculars in certain cases) but I’d like to say thank you to all the volunteers and Local Groups who are running special events for the weekend.
For instance, the Eastbourne & District Local Group will be holding a public BGBW event in Hampden Park on the 30th January. What a great idea to get even more people involved!
Incidentally, if you’re in South East England and you’d like to help us out by distributing Big Garden Bird Watch survey forms, please contact me at the South East Regional Office (01273 775333) and we can send some on to you.
These can be given to friends, posted door to door or left at a friendly shop, vet or library for people to pick up.
Enjoy the Birds!
Colin
More than 530,000 participants for Big Garden Bird Watch in 2011, that will be amazing! The most impressive thing about BGBW is that it's done in your own time and in the setting you choose, right from sitting in the lounge with a cup of tea as Colin says to making it a social affair with a group of people. Watching birds should be fun and younger people will be more inclined to take part in BGBW if there is an element of fun. If you are considering volunteering for the RSPB then BGBW is a good stepping off point and who knows you might end up doing some amazing work in some of the most beautiful locations in the UK for RSPB in the future. Thank you to those of you who do volunteer already and good luck to those who are considering it.
