RSPB NI Local Group 2022 Online Talks Programme

Spring into the new year with a new season of
RSPB NI local group talks.  

RSPB NI Local groups are volunteer-led groups of people working together to really make a difference for nature where it counts. They are the face and voice of the RSPB in your local community.

Here’s a rundown of some of the fantastic free online talks that the local groups have planned for this year, if you’d like to find out more about joining an RSPB local group or if you are interested in booking a place on one of the talks below, contact chris.pursell@rspb.org.uk.  

Talk: Birds, animals and reptiles of the Gambia
Speaker: Peter Munro, with a short introduction from Ruairi Brogan, RSPB NI policy officer
Date: Monday 10 January

Join Peter Munro, as he shares with us the animals, reptiles and some of the 500 bird species of The Gambia.

Talk: Engaging young people with nature
Speaker: Ellen Bradley, with a short introduction from Karen Sheil, RSPB NI learning development officer
Date: Monday 24 January
Time: 7:15pm

Ellen Bradley will be discussing ways to engage young people with nature and why it is so important that Natural History becomes an integral part of our education curriculum.

Talk: Swifts and urban biodiversity
Speaker: Edward Mayer
Date: Monday 7 February 
Time: 7:15pm
Location: Online - Zoom
Edward Mayer will be sharing the reasons for his lifelong love of swifts in this illuminating talk. Edward will discuss the active role he has played in swift conservation and how he works to help secure the future of the species, through advice, talks and volunteer action.

Talk: The wonderful world of moths and wetlands at WWT Castle Espie
Speaker: Ross McIlwrath
Date: Monday 21 February
Time: 7:15pm
Location: Online - Zoom
Join Ross McIlwrath (who you might have spotted on a SpringWatch last year), as he shares his passion for the wonderful world of moths. Ross is a moth recorder, with nearly a decade of experience looking at this fascinating group of insects.

Talk: Our favourite birds - the robin, wren, swallow and swan
Speaker: Stephen Moss
Date: Monday 7 March 
Time: 7:15pm
Location: Online - Zoom
Stephen Moss, leading nature author and naturalist, whose TV credits include the BAFTA award-winning SpringWatch, will read from his ‘bird biographies’ of the robin, wren, swallow and swan. The talk will be illustrated with stills and videos of the birds themselves.



Talk: Bird therapy
Speaker: Joe Harkness, with a short introduction from Joanne Sherwood, RSPB NI Director.
Date: Monday 21 March 
Time: 7:15pm
Location: Online - Zoom
Norfolk naturalist and author of ‘Bird Therapy,’ Joe Harkness takes us on his recovery journey, exploring how birdwatching and nature connection have become a fundamental part of this for him; and how they can be for other people, too.
