Yesterday I blogged about the works that are going on over on Wennington - creating a series of new shallow scrapes and drains across the marsh that would considerable enhance the marsh for wildlife...

Well since then things have been going with a bang...

Literally!

The contractors found something they were unsure of - we warn all contractors to be careful due to the military history on site, it turned out to be an unexploded ordinance!

As you can imagine the area was evacuated as the wardening team contacted the Police (and they called the Bomb Squad) who came over and checked out the finding...

Blimey - looks like a stone to me!

The bomb squad identified it as an 18 pound practice air craft bomb (so it would've been dropped from am aircraft), and decided to do a controlled explosion. It didn't half make a good bang! Something a little different for a Wednesday afternoon!

The funny thing is, after the explosion, the wardening team showed the Police and Bomb Squad off site (after doing the paperwork and what-not) and came back to the Visitor Centre when the contractors rang them saying "We might've found another one!"

So the Police and Bomb Squad had to turn back round and come back! In the end it wasn't a bomb, they weren't sure what it was, but not an explosive, so the archaeologist has taken it away to identify!
