A black dog is sleeping in the middle of a black road that has no streetlights and there is no moon. A car coming down the road with its lights off steers around the dog.

Okay, the only other thing I can think of is that there is a clue in the word "nearest" (as in nearest court of law). Working along those lines, was the suspect extradited and tried in another country?
Not as far as the man who saw the murder knows but he might have been.

No, sorry, no mirrors. Clue! Put yourself in the place of each of the men facing death, how would they think!
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
It's a toughie John! What were they asked anyway? If I was facing death by shooting, I wouldn't be thinking in 'black & white' that's for sure!!
