I thought Kate posted well and started a thread hoping that things would quieten down.
I have never responded to the pest and have supported patience in getting this thing sorted.
What happened ?- the post was immediately locked - I think that is incompetent abuse by poorly educated autocracy!!!!!

Nothing is simple. A rota system of volunteers will go wrong, and there will be misunderstandings. Someone will be sick or have urgent business to do, or any other number of problems, when they should be on call. Messages left asking to cover won't be picked up - they've gone out somewhere. Which would you treat as a priority if you weren't being paid?
Generally though it would be better than nothing, especially as the kinds of thing we want to work against happen infrequently.

Seriously thinking about trying harder!

I am the owner of one internet forum, and I have two moderators, I am the joint owner of four others, with 15 moderators, (1/4 share in each), and member of 3 others, all involved in Historical and Genealogical research. It is what I "Do"! My membership on this forum, and birdwatching, is my "Hobby". So I can speak on "Moderation" with some experience. The Idea that, there is no moderation outside 'office' hours is, quite frankly rubbish! Servers, can be accessed from anywhere in the world, by any computer, provided you have: (a) the authority to do so, and, (b) the relevant access/logon information. The biggest problem with "Moderation", is "Time, and People". to have 24/7 moderators, someone has to do it! it does not police itself! Which means that someone, has to give up their time to do it! Which means that they can't do anything else! Spammers: This is a problem for all forums, and the only way to deal with it, in simple language, is to block the entire web address from access, this means that the spammer, and their family, have to change their ISP, to get a new address, to recover access. Harsh, but very effective Regards Terry M

Hi-
he's not wrong, that's how we deal with it where I live :)

For advice about Birding, Identification, field guides, binoculars, scopes, tripods, etc - put 'Birding Tips' into the search box
If regulrs start quitting the RSPB over matters on the forum the trolls have won,he did say he would try to destroy the site and our mass exodus would give him great pleasure.I for one did not join the society just for its forun but to support its work in wildlife protection and as the U.K.'no.1 organisation in this field I will continue to support it no matter what some idiot smears all over the forum,I reckon he cannot say worse than a lot of us see/hear in everyday life.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
This makes a lot of sense to me. I hope that the RSPB take these ideas on board.
Best wishes Chris

Agree with Woodpecker lots of ideas that seem proven on other forums.Lets not be frightened of copying things that work as ours surely failed miserably.
Yes, Sooty, there's no need to reinvent the wheel. All they need to do, a well as take on board comments from those with relevant messageboard/forum experience here, is speak to their paid internet experts which no doubt they will be doing in due course. After that it's the costs to be considered, the biggest one of which will be ongoing labour.
Think if we had say 3 Good Egg volunteers who we could contact in emergency and block spammers until regular mods on the scene it should solve the problem and no make any cost to speak of and not much work as it hardly ever happens and probably would happen less if we could take action.
The question I would like to ask is if this happened again tonight what would happen?
Most places put something in place for the short term until a long term solution is found.
Has anything been put in place?
I'm sure thats what most people want, to be reassured.
Robert
In this case why not ... make the post invisible if someone clicks the 'abuse' button. Thats how another forum i went on worked... then the staff when they return can either reinstate or delete.

Owning a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer... it makes you a Nikon owner!
Hi Nicky,
I think that would leave us all open to abuse from anyone using the forums. If you don't agree with what a poster says - Zap ...... make his post invisible!
Cheers, Linda.
