There's an abandoned factory next to us, about two stories high. The flat roof has been used as a nesting site for a pair of Oystercatchers.
Now that there are chicks, the parents are trying to get the chicks off the roof, and crows are showing a keen interest in the activities.
This happened last year, and one chick died and the other was injured by the fall to the ground.
Is there any organisation (North Cumbria area) that could recover these chicks from the roof, or do we just leave them to their fate?
It's a risk the Oystercatchers take - they chose that location as a safe site, free from ground predators. If the parents are trying to get he chicks off the roof it is because it is their time to fledge - they just need encouraged. the parents will still protect them as they have done to this date. It's worth bearing in mind that unlike the majority of waders, Oystercatchers always bring food to their young, which is why they can choose "safe" locations to nest in - as opposed to the likes of Lapwing, Curlew etc whereas the chicks are on the ground and vulnerable from day one of hatching.
