Goshawk

So I've decided to start a bucket list of birds I'd like to actually see in the wild while I still have the chance. Top of the list is the Goshawk, I've always loved the name ever since I was little and had a copy of the Ladybird Birds Of Prey book. I live in Milton Keynes and was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on the best place closest to where I live to catch a glimpse of one.

Cheers.

  • Yikes that is tricky - they are not an easy bird to see.  I have seen one once at a distance in April sky dancing and because they are still persecuted people tend to be a little cautious as to exact whereabouts but this was in the South of England.  You need woodland.  Even if you make a special trip to somewhere like the Forest of Dean there is no guarantee but I understand the "New Fancy View"  can yield sightings but it might be a little late now.

  • I agree with Germain, and you're not likely to get anyone giving you specific locations at this time of year. If you fancy an overseas trip, Berlin is a really good tourist destination and certainly the best place for seeing goshawks that I've been to.

  • Thank you for the advice and because of the persecution I totally understand why people are unwilling to reveal any good locations. Not to worry, I would rather sacrifice seeing one happy in the knowledge they are being left alone.

  • There are a few view points in UK, but as Germain said, it's late now. I confirm the New Fancy View in Forest of Dean is a good option if you want a UK based holiday next late Winter/early Spring.
