Regards,
Ian.
Avocets have bred and nested for quite a few years at Washington Wetlands. A big difference to when I visited Minsmere in 1973 as at that period when I visited Minsmere in 1973, Avocets only bred and nested at Minsmere and Havergate Island in Suffolk of which both are RSPB reserves. But sadly all the young Aviceta have been taken by various gulls over the last 3 years at Washington Wetlands. I did tell the Reserve manager at Washington Wetlands of whom I know as I visit Washington Wetlands regularly as what the RSPB had to do many years ago at Minsmere as Minsmere had similar problems. I won’t say what the RSPB did. But sadly what the RSPB did over many years ago had to be done and I did agree with the RSPB at time 100%. I won’t say any more! But above a photo of an Avocet on Wader Lake at Washington Wetlands. On the far side of Wader Lake is a Heronty of which the Herons will start to take over the nests from around January/February. The Avocet will arrive from late March/early April 2022. The Common Terns arrive later from the last few days of April and the majority will start arriving from early May.
And another photo from another hide overlooking Wader Lake at Washington Wetlands.
