Contribute to the research of artificial intelligence in the field of bird identification!

Are you interested in birds in nature? Or do you want to contribute to research in the field of machine learning? I am seeking participants for the survey for my project aimed at improving the accuracy and speed of data labeling through the use of human-in-the-loop image classification. Specifically, we are looking for individuals to identify species of birds in a set of images. No background knowledge of birds is necessary, and the survey will take no more than 10 minutes of your time. If you are interested in contributing to my project, please consider taking my survey (click the link below). Your participation would be greatly appreciated and would contribute to the advancement of research in this field!

  • I've completed the survey. Two points.
    1) all but two of the birds aren't UK species.
    2) IMO one of the two I got wrong is infact right and your i.d. is wrong!

    Which bird waa that?

I might not come back to this thread again. Depends what, if anything comes back, but my clue is the RSPB President can't i.d. this species either if his twitter account is anything to go by.
  • Hi

I just took the so-called test-

Some of the birds in the choices were NOT the bird shown above- but the question said MOST like-

However sometimes MOST like isn't the answer in the field especially with juvenile plumaged Gulls etc.

Check out the primary projection on the 'curlew'- The bill is definitely not a Whimbrel but ticking the other 'curlew' is apparently a wrong answer

RE,MEMBER- Kenn Kaufman was almost certainly CORRECT- 50% of all bird photos on the net are incorrectly identified !
Remember that good photographers are not necessarily good bird identifiers :))

Putting on my patronising woolly hat for my mate Robbo-:)

But he's the President of the RSPB !
You wouldn't expect him to get it wrong would you?
It must be right if he says so....

I remember being told similar at age 16 when I disputed an older birders wader ID - I've obviously been wrong all these years though because I still think Black Tailed Godwits show huge black and white wing bars in flight..:(

ps- I remember a certain Mr Oddie noting that the RSPB AGM was held in October when most serious birders would be on Scilly or Fair Isle ...

A lot of stock photos that media purchase for publication come from providers of images that don't verify the id's that they are supplied with. Stock images are cheap (for at least one reason). Or should that be mis-marketing?

Or is that me being specially pedantic?

I've had to web-search Ken Kaufman because the name was unfamiliar to me.
  • As feared, OP too busy to post anything back. I rarely contribute to requests on this forum as the majority come across as people wanting to delegate/save their own time. This did have red flags, and curiosity got the better of vibes! I should have closed the survey as soon as American spelling cropped up in it, and certainly as soon as non UK birds did.

Yes, I did wonder about a couple of questions containing no 'same species' matches. I didn't have a clue on several of the species, and was just assuming/guessing they were just different appearances due to male/female.

Just shows how flawed the research appears. Back to the drawing board would be my suggestion.
  • KK is an interesting guy- though I haven't met him: My friend Jon Dunn thinks we would probably rebound.)

His Kingbird Highway is a great read ( IMHO) if you've travelled the US - and his ID books are usually on the ball

    He's an individual :)

    (personal opinions)

I very rarely follow random links posted to blogs/social media. Especailly when from an unknown.

    Qualtrics.com is a commercial (US-based, with a presence in Asia?) IT-oriented survey/opinion/market research company.

They can host surveys for others. They get paid to try to get information/opinions. Therefore I am not surprised that the OP has not returned. I'd have been extremely surprised if they had.

"Qualtrics offers a cloud-based subscription software platform for experience management,"

Experience is what you get shortly after you needed it. (i've had a couple of those moments).
