Big Garden Birdwatch 2023- Share with us what you saw.

I thought I would start our anual bird count thread, a few have posted on indvidual threads.

I had quite a good count, the usual happened in that some who come regularity, never appeared. Collard dove, Pheasant, and some never came in the humbers as normal, Starling, Sparrow, Dunnock. Nevertheless here is what I had from 2.15pm-3.15 today. They were given premium seed, peanuts, sunflower hearts, Niger seed, fat balls and fresh water.

3 Blackbird, 1 Blue tit, 9 Chaffinch, 1 Dunnock, 13 Goldfinch, 1 Great tit, 2 Tree sparrow, 2 Robin, 8 Starling, 2 Woodpigeon

42 birds in total.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • I have many visitors everyday. This morning between 9am and 10 am I saw 2 robins, four starlings, 4 blue tits, I coal tit, 2 great tits , 8 long tailed tits, a pair of bull finches, a pair of mistletoe thrushes, three blackbirds, one great spotted woodpecker, one wren, 5 hedge sparrows, two dunnocks, four gold finches.
I feed them peanuts, meal worms and suet blocks. I feed them early morning and late afternoon.
  • I also had three wood pigeons
  • My 2023 big Garden Birdwatch 2°23 survey this weekend!

    Regards,

    Ian.

  • My visitors were less than usual, maybe the dull drizzly weather.
    1 robin
    1 great tit
    1 great spotted woodpecker
    1 long tailed tit
    2 nuthatches
    2 wood pigeons
    2 dunnocks
    3 coal tits
    3 blue tits
I’d put out a mixture of peanuts, mixed seeds and grains, sunflower hearts and fat balls
  • This is the second year that I have taken part in this survey and really enjoyed my hour of sitting and watching the birds in my garden.

    7 Blackbirds
    1 Magpie
    1 Durnock
    2 Goldfinch
    7 Robins
    10 Tree Sparrows
    11 Starlings
    5 Blue Tits
    1 Great Tit
    1 Woodpigeon

All the above was in the first half-hour of the watch then the neighbour at the bottom of my garden decided to get his ladders our climb on the roof and start removing the tiles and banging which frightened the birds away. I sat it out for the rest of the hour but no more visitors. Was totally gutted, but it happens. Still what I saw bought a lot of joy to my morning.
  • Follow up on my recent post. I fully intend to carry on watching and recording the number of sighting in my garden on a weekly basis throughout the year. I have found the whole experience truly fascinating.
  • My bird listing is:

  • unless the rules have changed, people are only supposed to count the maximum number of individual species at any one given moment. It seems some people are counting individual birds every time they see them.
